Understanding Equine Sedation Dentistry
Why Sedation Matters
Equine dental procedures require the horse to remain still while we work inside their mouth with specialized instruments. Sedation is not about convenience — it's about safety and welfare. A sedated horse experiences minimal stress, feels no pain, and allows thorough, high-quality treatment.
The Sedation Process
At Equide, we use a combination of alpha-2 agonists and opioids administered intravenously. This provides reliable sedation, pain relief, muscle relaxation, and quick onset within 3-5 minutes.
Is Sedation Safe?
When administered by a qualified veterinarian, sedation is very safe. We assess overall health, heart rate, and medications before sedating. We monitor throughout and adjust dosing as needed.
After the Procedure
Recovery typically takes 30-60 minutes. Keep your horse in a quiet area, do not offer food until fully recovered, and avoid riding for the rest of the day. Questions? Get in touch.
